Day 3

Day 3
We arrived in Longreach at about 8.00am and stopped and had breakfast.  Later we went to the Qantas Museum but didn’t go through it as it worked out too expensive.  Across the road from the Qantas Museum was the Stockman’s Hall of Fame.  We went in and had a look at the exhibits they had there.  It was quite interesting reading about our forebears who pioneered this country.  We were going to stay in Longreach overnight but decided to travel to Winton which would bring us 180 kms closer to Mt Isa so we would have 460 kms to drive tomorrow and not such a  big drive.  Pity it is a Saturday as Winton hasn’t reached the 21st century yet and everything was closed except for an overpriced opal store and the visitor information centre. And hotels of course!!!!!!  We were quite taken by the countryside.  Travelling between Longreach and Winton it was very green after the rains rather than bare red dirt with sparse dry vegetation.  The countryside was also very flat until just before Winton where there were a couple of mountain ranges in the distance.  Apparently because of millions of years of erosion, dinosaur footprints are now visible in the rock formations.
